It was a whole new world for me. Coming to Kyiv International School has turned my life around. The new educational environment was absolutely different from what Ive done for the last 17 years in Korea.

My self-confidence used to be significantly lower when I was in a Korean high school, as I felt forced to work against my will, regurgitating information I cared little about, instead of actually comprehending and learning. I often compared myself to others since the school system and environment made us compete against each other for the highest marks instead of building teamwork and dependency among peers. However, at Kyiv International School they took a new approach to education, one where I was taught how to be an empowered learner. I didn’t have to compete with others to feel better about myself. Instead, I work with my friends so we could both grow. The environment of international school interested me. I was able to communicate with others. I was able to not being selfish, but able to learn how to take care of others. I was able to gain knowledge from the course, not just memorizing without understanding just for good grades.

International school was an opportunity to meet new people and experience the world a different way. For the first time, the world was open wide. It gave me a new way to look at education. Various experiences from different systems of education mean a lot to me – it gave me a vision and because of this, I want to become a teacher of an international school.

English is a commonly used language all over the world. However, there is one more language which is well-known around the world. I consider math as a universal language, which is why I am interested in it. It inspired me when I first came to Kyiv International School because it was the only course that I transitioned into seamlessly. Although my language skills were not wonderful, I was able to understand the mathematical material in class. As I am inspired to study math, I joined a math club in my school. I realized that there are a number of ways to approach an answer of problem. I took on the challenge and developed my skills together with members. I was able to enrich my knowledge and increase my ability to do math at a higher level.

Mathematics makes me communicate with people through mathematics, even if we dont speak a common language. It also allows me to move one step forward to my life goal which is being a secondary math teacher in an international school. Therefore, learning math in English is extremely important to me. It would let me express math with full understanding. A university-level study will allow me to communicate mathematically which will help tremendously for my future career.
