The studies under analysis are characterized by the use of different methodologies. The study by Yi Xu is comparative research based on the utilization of quantitative content analysis (Xu 7). Michelangelo Landgrave employs a different methodology, and he implements an experiment to identify policymakers behaviors related to ace responsiveness (Landgrave 621). Xu explores the peculiarities of public diplomacy by analyzing social media communications (7). The researcher examined 60 news articles from the USA and 304 articles from Pakistan (Xu 29). It was found that the American policymakers used more linear communication patterns, while Chinese officials utilized top-down communication. Landgrave sent emails from fictional applicants to 1,600 legislative offices that asked about scholarship data (623). The researcher reports that Hispanics were discriminated against in terms of reply rate and the content of the reply (Landgrave 626). Thus, the two studies are different based on the methodology used (quantitative content analysis and experiment) and the bulk of data analyzed.

The researchers identified different variables in their studies as well. Xu concentrated on such variables as functional, normative, and aesthetic dimensions (8). The researcher analyzed the content of news articles with the help of a set of codes related to the identified dimensions. Landgrave focused on such variables as the response rate and helpfulness of the information provided by officials (625). Although content analysis is utilized in the two studies, they are still different in other aspects. Moreover, Landgrave has a narrower scope of topics that help the researcher to evaluate the helpfulness of their responses (625). It is clear that researchers have a wide range of methods to explore diverse issues in political science and analyze trends and behaviors of politicians and the public.
