Violence has occurred in many peoples lives throughout history. Violence occurs in schools, homes, and in public places. Violence is the use of physical or psychological power to injure, hurt or destroy someone, or something. Violence occurs every day across the world. Another common form of violence is youth violence. Fortunately, violence can be prevented or even stopped if people take the proper steps. How has violence affected our lives? What are the causes of youth violence, and what can be done to prevent it?

Even though it may not seem like it, violence affects kids like you and me. For example, people argue or even fight at school. The effects of violence on people dont have to be physical or direct. Even knowledge of violence can affect a person. Many children and adults alike have witnessed violence on television. According to the National Research Foundation, children being exposed to violence can lead to extended periods of stress, depression, helplessness, being numb to future violence, exposure, being uncaring towards others, and becoming violent. People witnessing violent acts in the news can be just as bad as seeing it in person.

Violence has many other causes as well. Household violence can occur too, such as abuse, verbal harassment, domestic violence, and others. It can also be caused by being raised poorly as a child or being raised in an area where active violence takes place. Children raised without supervision can end up becoming friends with the wrong people. Gangs forming can end up with others being pressured into joining one themselves. Nowadays, because we have social media, can say mean things and get away with it. Lots of people, including children, are influenced by the media and what is said. Online bullying can also occur and hurt a person mentally. Adding on to another point, peer pressure can make people do things they wouldnt normally do. For example, a very common form of this is someone being pressured into taking drugs or alcohol. Kids are also made fun of for being poor, or not having what another person has, this could also make that person being bullied angry, resulting in them bullying someone else.

Luckily there are many ways to help prevent bullying. If you see a fight about to start or bullying has occurred you can report it to a teacher or administrator. You could also ignore the bully, but this might not be as effective. If you are being bullied or hurt by somebody, you could also talk to a guidance counselor. If you are being hurt at home you could also call violence prevention hotlines. If you are nice to people, they might be nice to you back. Bullying could be caused by someone being lonely as well. So, if you offer to sit with someone new at lunch or offer to be their friend, you could be preventing another person from becoming a bully.

This paper showed ways to prevent youth violence. Being nice to people, reporting bullying to an adult, and getting in contact with a bullying prevention hotline are all good ways of preventing violence. As Martin Luther King said, You are not only responsible for what you say, but also for what you do not say.
