For the past few years, I have been involved in Student Council as the class treasurer, in Boy Scouts as the Patrol Leader, in an extracurricular speech club as a team captain, and in tennis as a captain.

Being on Student Council has greatly improved my presentation and leadership skills. Speaking to a group of over 50 peers and superiors on a weekly basis have made me a more proficient and concise public speaker. In addition, my experience in Student Council has led me to become better at organization and time management, both of which will be crucial for preparing for earlier Model UN Conferences. My experience in Boy Scouts has also taught me extensive leadership and speaking skills.

My responsibilities as a Patrol Leader in my troop include instructing my peers and leading weekly meetings along with others. I have also officially completed the Boy Scout Public Speaking merit badge. I would be able to employ these skills in Model UN when presenting opening statements and in moderated caucuses. Boy Scouts, however, does not simply include one-way speeches to large groups; it also includes communication within a group. I would be able to use such skills in unmoderated caucuses while planning resolution papers with other delegates.

Aside from Student Council and Boy Scouts, I am also the team captain for my extracurricular speech team. Along with my team, I participate in various public-speaking competitions and training sessions. In these competitions, I give various speeches ranging anywhere from two minutes to ten minutes long. Participating on the team has encouraged me to be succinct in shorter speeches – which will be useful in moderated caucuses – and more elaborate and comprehensive in longer speeches – which will be useful in unmoderated caucuses and general discussions. On my tennis team, I also learned the power of collaboration and cooperation.

In both tennis and Model UN, working together with others – either friendly teammates or unacquainted delegates – is vital to a successful outcome. My experiences in Student Council, Boy Scouts, public speaking, and a team will all help me become more successful than others in Model UN.
