The controversial representation of Christopher Columbus and his role in American history caused the emergence of two opposing stances. Hence, some people emphasize the importance of this historical figure that contributed to the discovery of the continent, whereas others suppose that his involvement brought more harm than good (Shafer & Walsh, 2017). From my perspective, the correct portrayal of Columbus would be the elimination of extremes and recognition of both the positive and negative impact of his contribution.
It is impossible to underestimate the role of Christopher Columbus in the European exploration of new lands. The fact that he initiated a turning point in American history does not allow him to neglect his work (Shafer & Walsh, 2017). Indeed, Columbus created numerous opportunities for the exchange of cultures and ideas. However, an entirely positive representation of this person would not correspond to reality, and, therefore, should be eliminated.
The opposing views usually refer to a range of problems that Columbus brought to the continent. They include the violent abuse of Native Americans, the launch of the slave trade, and the introduction of lethal diseases to people unprepared for them (Shafer & Walsh, 2017). Nevertheless, such a negative representation of the impact of Columbus on the further development of the continent would be incomplete as well as the first stance.
From my point of view, the best portrayal of Christopher Columbus would be the one closest to reality. This stance implies the maintenance of balance between the good and bad consequences of his discovery, which allows one to see the real picture. Thus, people should remember to present all the sides of the matter rather than a one-sided opinion to ensure the proper portrayal of Columbus in American history.
